Vespa and Aprilia scooters unlikely to get dual-channel ABS due to cost cutting strategy.
Vespa and Aprilia scooters in India will receive single-channel ABS soon. The Vespa 150 and Aprilia 150 scooters will get single-channel ABS early in 2019 in order to comply with the Indian government’s stricter safety norms. Dual-channel ABS system is unlikely to make way for these models as this will increase pricing significantly.
Piaggio has just launched the updated Aprilia SR 150, Vespa SXL 150 and Vespa VXL 150 models. All these models come sans ABS, which is going to be mandatory for the two-wheelers from next year. In order to comply with the new norms, Piaggio has decided to introduce the safety feature within next few months. Initially, dual-channel ABS was considered for the scooters, but the brand decided not to advance with it, as the pricing will shot higher affecting sales.
Speaking about the upcoming safety norms in India, all the two-wheelers with engine capacity of 125cc and higher will get ABS system from April 1, 2019. This norm is applicable for both the motorcycles and scooters. While the 125cc and higher displacement two-wheelers will get ABS, the smaller engine powered vehicles will get Combi Braking System or CBS.
