An electric scooter from Suzuki might disrupt Ather and 22Motors

Suzuki is said to develop an electric scooter especially for the Indian market which will have the performance of 110-125cc petrol powered scooter

The Boss of Suzuki India, Devashish Handa (Marketing and Sales) said that Suzuki is developing an electric scooter for the Indian market. However, any other details regarding the electric scooter are not revealed. The scooter in question will be specifically made for the country but based on the global electric platform.

One can easily make out the fact that the first electric scooter from the Japanese giant will be potent enough to counter any 110-125cc petrol powered scooter. Anyways, it has to be, because no one will be interested to buy a low powered scooter with limited range. A real-world range of about 100-120km is a must for daily commuting and lower range anxiety among customers.

If we put these requirements the first scooter that comes to our mind is Ather 450 which has a top speed of 80 kmph and range of about 75km. The 450 is equipped with a 5.4 kW BLDC motor, power of which is transferred via a belt drive. The battery pack capacity stands at 2.4 kWh which has a claimed life of 50,000 km. The Suzuki scooter must have more range per change than Ather 450 to give it run for its money. Otherwise, Ather is holding quite a strong market share in Bengaluru as on now.

As the Indian government has decided to stop the sales of petrol powered bikes and scooters from 1st April 2025, the company is taking the right decision to electrify its products. Other two-wheeler manufacturers are also either investing in electric startups or developing their own electric two-wheelers.

Before any breakthrough in battery technology occurs, everyone is focusing on lithium-ion battery tech. Every now and then someone comes up with faster charging tech for Li-ion batteries. Some battery makers are increasing the battery energy density of the batteries to provide more km per charge. Moreover, with each passing year, researchers and scientists are inching towards superior battery technology for future mobility.
